Rhinoceros skin is very thick, up to 1.5 cm. It is tough but also quite sensitive to sunburn and insect bites.

They often cover themselves in mud to protect their skin from insects and the sun.

Under the hot African sun, white rhinos take cover by lying in the shade.
Rhinos are also wallowers.
They find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sunblock
